AOL Active Virus Shield powered by Kaspersky is currently the best free anti-virus (99.62% detection rate). The most popular free anti virus programs are AVG Free and Avast which are recommended above Norton and McAfee but have poor detection rates (82.82%, 87.46% respectively). Norton is notoriously bloated and takes forever to perform full systems scans. If you want to pay for an anti-virus NOD32 is highly recommended. You can download AOL Active Virus Shield, AVG or Avast from the links below. There is absolutely no spyware and they are completely free but your system should only have one anti-virus program.

Any of these will be more reliable, less susceptible to
viri, uses your hardware more efficiently, and they’re
all free.

VIRUS REMOVAL STEPS:

this will be long, tedious and frustrrating but it needs doing step by step

XP:

most nasties are set to reside in your restore system. clean them out and forget to close S.R. BEFORE you start clean up and they return when you reboot.

do this while OFFLINE!
start–all programs–accessories–system tools–system restore–settings–drive [ c ]–setting
check off and while there, click–hold–drag slider to 5% and recover 10% hard drive memory

control panel–internet options–general
delete:
cookies–history [ and set days to keep to 0 ]–delete temp internet files

privacy tab:
advanced–override–allow session,allow 1st party–BLOCK 3rd party [ spyware/tracking ] cookies

Recycle Bin
click on recycle bin and empty it

Disk Clean:
all programs–accessories–system tools–disk clean [ and later disk defrag ]
choose os [ c ] to clean,wait,click ok [ twice ]

now go back and do disk defrag [ seleck anylize--run or ok ]

Prefetch Folder
my computer–local disk drive [ c ]–windows–prefetch
select view–select all–press delete key on keyboard

now–IF you have any protective programs [ anti-virus--anti-spyware ] installed,NOW is the time to run those.

once you are clean, return to sytem restore and turn it back on [ reverse above instructions ].

choose to create a new restore point, name it and you’re done!

Vista:

vista is a bit different, yet almost the same.
getting to internet options is the same,so look at the instructions for what to do with XP above

disable system restore:
right click computer on start page list–select properties–select system protection–uncheck os [ c ]
REMEMBER TO RESET SYSTEM RESTORE AFTER YOU ARE DONE WITH VIRUS CLEAN UP AND CREATE NEW RESTORE POINT !

disk clean & defrag
control panel–perfromance,information & tools–click disk clean up
select drive [ c ]–ok–okclick delete files

disk defrag is on the same page along with disk clean except it’s called advanced tools
see XP instructions on what to do–when

again,just like XP,run your anti-virus–anti-spyware cleaners

you can get what you need for protection programs from here

I downloaded a FREE anti-virus that was recommended by Martin Lewis Money Expert. It as supposed to be free for a few weeks but that was 3 months ago. It is called AVG. type AVG free download into your search engine and just download it. Every morning when I turn my computer on, it does a scan. If your free time runs out just move onto the next one. Good Luck

First remove stop sign its a rogue program (its known to give false reading).

then do a free online scan:

Then if you want the best free AV then use AVS:

There is a very simple way to scan for most recent viruses without installing a new program, but once your pc is clean I would strongly suggest parting with the extra bucks for protection. The service is not meant to be a permanent substitute.
Do a web search on McAfee Stinger. From the site run, or save, Avert Stinger.
