Both are free, as powerful as paid programs, such as Norton and McAfee, and don’t use up as many resources.
Just boot into Safe Mode (Press F8 when turning on the computer) and run full scans.

i’ve had it with mcafee and norton. try going to http://www.affordablecomp.com website, click on downloads on the upper right of the home page, you will find avg8,adaware, and spybot free downloads. download each and update. run each one to really clean things up. i do it every day. i also went to microsoft dowloads, and downloaded their malicious software removal tool and defender. so far no problems, and things are running smoothly
