I recommend Nod32 or Kaspersky mainly. BitDefender is not bad either.

Free: Avast! or AVG but they are not as good as the above.

There really is not a best AV product. Each one works differently and depends on your habits. I prefer an active scan as to a passive one where others would disagree with me.

As far as antispyware goes, you can have more than one on your system. Just don’t have more than one running constantly.

I suggest a three package combo. Buy Spysweeper and then download Ad-Aware from lavasoft and then Spybot Search and Destroy.

I have tried a lot of freeware and commercial products. The bottom line is, I haven’t found any products that can remove or protect you from all virus etc.

I’m an AVG 8.0.1 Free fan because it just works, is fairly light on resources. And…
Rapid virus database updates are available for the lifetime of the product, thereby providing the high level of detection capability.

Security is a three tier affair, one firewall, one anti-virus and as much adware/spyware removal software as you feel needed?

Along with…

Superantispyware
Spybot Search N Destroy

I think that Windows Live Onecare are the most reliable software that provides antivirus, spyware, adware, malware, trojan and regular computer tune up (cleans the registry). Windows Live Onecare comes from Microsoft.com, so you do not have to worry about those potential risks when you download the software. However, Windows Live Onecare are only available for 90 days trial only, but you can subscribe if you find that it meets your satisfaction during the past 90 days. There was once a Trojan in my system, but after 5 minutes of installation, it automatically detected it and removed it permanently.

If you are willing to pay then get kaspersky internet suite.
If you want free then here is a good combinations:
avira antivir personal + threatfire free + spywareblaster + kerio firewall 4 or ghostwall free (this is a light resource combination).

Well there alot of free anti-virus programs out there but its just down to user preferance really. I have AVG 8.00.100 =)

However anti-spyware for me Spybot – Search & Destroy is the “God” program for me…it is amazing =) there is nothing like it, I totally love it =) Its imunizes your PC (stops infections before they can get it) and also scans your PC to destroy infections…IT IS AMAZING!

Cheers,
Shed

If you are going to purchase it, just buy Kasperskys full internet suit. A all in one that is VERY highly rated. Get it on sale for about 30-40 bucks. Actually, you can do it at their website. For FREE stuff, you will need to download a few individual components.
You recieved some excellent pointers, but my list is as follows:
The best free suit is from Comodo.
Virus protection: AVG, or Avast
Firewall: On Line Armour ( no MS product or Zonealarm)
Spyware terminator
CCCLeaner for removal of temp, and registry cleanup files

It really depends on what your looking for.
Norton is good {norton.com} But then again so is F.I.R.E.
F.I.R.E. is probably the best.
yahoo will not let me type the F.I.R.E. url but give me your e-mail address and I can send it to you!

I have had my computer for 5 years and never had a virus that spyware didn’t stop. The spyware and the anti-virus is made by Webroot. Maybe I am just lucky, I don’t know but as far as I am concerned it will always be Webroot.

I agree with everyone above who recommends AVG. I believe that the “free” version expires in less than 6 months, though.

I am using McAfee right now because it is provided free with my DSL account. Most DSL servers are providing something.

Both McAfee and AVG are supposed to catch spyware, but a lot does get through. I use Spybot S&D once every couple weeks. If you get in a real mess, “Crap Cleaner” (CC) is a great program. It will delete all of your “cookies,” however, so that you will have to re-enter every userid and password for anything you have been doing previously.

You probably use a certain amount of “spyware” already for some good things. Quite a bit comes in everytime you get on Yahoo, for example.
