The IT guy says my PC is fine, but it is slow…the hard drive light is often lit when I am doing little…seems like I could use more RAM. I reboot at least once or twice a day. I typically utilize MS Outlook, a single industry-proprietary software and two IMs. I only have 32% space left on my main drive…IT guy says that is irrelevant. Anyway, I defrag, use window washer and a registry-cleaning software. Thx for your help and advice!

Have the IT person check the size of the Personal Folder in your Outlook. If a file reaches the 2 gb size it will cause Outlook (and by extension the rest of the computer) to run slower and slower. You may need to compress the Outlook Personal Folder, or divide it into two or more smaller files.
Without knowing what kind of processor you have, how much memory, and what OS version you’re running, it’s hard to say. But an overactive hard drive typically indicates your memory utilization is exceeding your physical memory, causing the system to swap to hard drive. I assume you have an up to date antivirus program running as well. If not, it could very well be a virus or spyware.
The IT guy is right… hard drive capacity has little-to-effect on the overall speed of the computer.
If you want it to run more efficiently, you can always add more RAM (assuming your motherboard isn’t maxed out).
You could open the “run” command box (click start then click “Run…”) and type “msconfig” (without the quotes) and disable any and all unnecessary start-up apps and processes. This will make the computer boot up a bit faster because you don’t have a bunch of random junk trying to run simultaneously upon start-up.
You should uninstall any and all programs that you no longer need. Also clear your internet cache and temp files.
You could also upgrade your power supply. I would only recommend doing that if you have less than 300 watts. Upgrading to something lie 450 – 500 watts will result in a lower ambient temp inside of the case (and inside of the power supply) because the power supply isn’t running close to full load. This lower temp will be better for the CPU. This may only make a very small difference though.
As far as the issues you are seeing, you need to increase your paging file. Memory utilization is being run on the harddrive. Also – if you are running norton INternet Security or 360, consider uninstalling and installing Norton Antivirus as it is a lower resource program. You may be able to fly with a minor RAM upgrade and the ellimination of high-resource software. …and yes viruses slow down your machine, but Im sure you would know if you had one.
Now about upgrades:
If your computer can be upgraded. It really depends on the money you want to spend and the type of PC you have. If this is a manufacturers computer like a dell or HP, you can check their websites and look for available hardware upgrades. If this is a custom PC, then you may have some alternatives to the type of upgrade you will perform (either software or hardware)
If upgrading Hardware on a custom PC:
Tell your computer guy that you want to check compatability on CHIPSET ($120 – UP) and MEMORY ($50 – $200) and HardDrive (1TB – $90) upgrades for your computer. Costs between 150 – 600
If upgrading Software on a custom PC,
First, check to make sure you are not running any programs that utilize the majority of the computers resources. Such as a high-end anti-virus software. If none, then consider a clean boot.
Tell your Tech that you want to backup your files, and reinstall the OS and associated programs. Usually costs between 80 – 150.
Sounds like you need an IT guy that has the time to grow with your technological needs.
You can try the steps below:
1) uninstall any unused programs from your computer
2) delete any unnecessary files
3) run a disk cleanup
4)scan the computer for viruses or spyware
After that, please run a disk defragmentation — a good solution to fix a slow computer, in my opinion. What is more, do remember to turn on the real-time safe-guard of your anti-virus program yo protect your PC at any time. Wish it help you!
