Norton has been the best for me. It’s not too expensive and does the job pretty well, I’ve never had any spyware or trojans or anything since I’ve had it. I have gotten that stuff with other so-called spyware programs, so Norton is pretty top notch.

Spybot – Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven’t intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been “hijacked” (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don’t see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free.

When it comes to installing, using, price, and how well it works, no doubt, SPYBOT. I’ve been hooked since I first used it. Have tried others, but don’t like as much. Spybot took my computer and erased all the garbage and really sped it up.

Trend Micro Antispyware is best….. and consider the source: webmaster bluecollarpc.net.

Do what I did. Search around reviews on the Net and write down a list of the most popular and used antispyware programs. Go to each one and download the trial version of the program. One at a time, do a full scan of your pc. Note the results and check them for false postives. Use the free RegSeeker that has a Windows Registry scanner to look up the registry items you may get in results. Look up the files you may get in results. Do it for each program. Are they really on your computer – or are they false positives that the program is just trying to get you to buy it ? This is a tactic by lesser known/used programs and fake programs – false positives to goad you into purchase.

And there you are…. you can believe your own results first hand rather than other people. Just over a year ago when I did this Webroot just about tied with Trend Micro – and both of these programs have the real-time active shields which others don’t. Both of these found 4 times as much as the next two runner-ups. Both of these found up to an more than 10 times as much as all the next ones down the list. I don’t believe much has changed in that short time. Trend Micro is a tad more advanced while Webroot Spysweeper nicely addresses both novice and advanced user. Trend Micro’s shields will block a little more. Trend Micro has the “trickle” feature which is so light on resources you don’t even know it’s running in the background doing a smart or full scan. It also has the Network Integrity Check which preserves all settings blocking rogue proxies from hijacking the pc which Webroot does not. Webroot is heavy on the system like the traditional Norton Antivirus. If you have been an older Norton AV user – Webroot is kind of just like that. You know you can trust it but it is a little heavy during scans. If you are not new – just get Trend Micro Antispyware.

NOTES…. Forget all the crap about get free stuff and Spybot S&D. Free stuff offers no real time protection – only paid subscription does. Spybot SD has one of the worst ratings consistently for the last 4 years and is never getting better. Search it. Do know that cybercriminals and bad pc repairmen and “kiddie script” type bragging rights creeps will and continually post to security boards always screaming to use the free stuff and they always, always first jump in with Spybot S&D is the best. You’re not duped anymore now ?

In my own experience, I would have to say
1) superantispyware
2) avg antispyware.
If these two programs cannot remove all spyware then nothing will.
